Umbrella Invention

Legend has it that Yun, the wife of Lu Ban, was also a skillful craftsman in ancient China. She was the inventor of the umbrella, and the first umbrella was given to her husband to use when he went out to build houses for people.

The word “umbrella” had been around for a long time, so she probably created an umbrella that could be held together. The question of who invented the umbrella has been the subject of many different opinions.

In China, the umbrella was invented by Yun around 450 B.C. It was called a “mobile house”. In England, umbrellas were not used until the 18th century. At one time, the umbrella was a feminine object, indicating a woman’s attitude toward love. Holding the umbrella upright meant that she was committed to love; holding it open in her left hand meant “I have no time to spare now”. Slowly shaking the umbrella means no confidence or distrust in the umbrella; leaning the umbrella on the right shoulder means don’t want to see somebody again. In the 19th century, men started using umbrellas. Because of the rain in England, the umbrella was an indispensable part of British life, becoming a symbol of the traditional British way of life, a must for London merchants and officials, and the symbol of the British – John Bull with an umbrella in his hand. It is also an indispensable object in literature and movies. An umbrella museum was established in England in 1969. Umbrellas have many other uses. In 1978, a group of exiled Bulgarians were stabbed with the tips of umbrellas by assassins on Waterloo Bridge and died of poisoning. Some umbrella handles can be sprayed with pepper and used to stop vicious dogs from chasing and biting.
