Nowadays, people talk a lot PFAS free. This regulation for use PFAS-free coating already applies in cloths long time before. While it also requests anything use the fabric need to be PFAS free even this fabric is not skin touched.
1. What is PFAS
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, nicknamed forever chemicals. It is a fluorine-based waterproof coating long used on umbrella pongee/polyester cloth, to create strong water-repellent performance.
Three generations of PFAS waterproof coatings
Contains PFOA/PFOS, extremely stable, great waterproof & oil-proof. Big flaw: Hard to break down, builds up in human blood, linked to liver and immune damage; EU fully banned now.
Less toxic than C8, used as a replacement after C8 ban. Still belongs to PFAS, persists in nature; EU limits PFHxA (core C6 ingredient) strictly from Oct 2026.
Zero fluorine, no PFAS at all. Uses silicone or polyurethane waterproof layers, the only legal long-term choice for EU/UK/US exports.
2. Pros & Cons of PFAS umbrella cloth
Advantages of PFAS coating
- • Super water repellent: Water rolls off fully, no soaking even in heavy rain
- • Long-lasting effect: Waterproof stays strong after long storage & repeated folding
- • Anti-stain: Resists mud, oil marks for business printed logo umbrellas
Critical Disadvantages
- 1. Environmental hazard: Cannot decompose for hundreds of years, pollutes soil and water globally
- 2. Health risk: Long-term exposure raises cholesterol, weakens immunity, may harm growth
- 3. Strict global bans: Non-compliant goods get blocked at customs, seized or returned
3. Key Global Rules for Export Umbrellas (2026 latest)
- • PFOA/PFOS: Max 25ppb, effectively banned
- • PFHxA (C6 core): Must be under 25ppb starting 10 Oct 2026 for all textile goods including umbrellas
- • France full limit: Single PFAS<25ppb, total PFAS<250ppb from Jan 2026
California Prop 65 requires warning labels if PFAS exceeds thresholds; major brands only accept PFAS-free fabric
Follows similar EU chemical safety trends; big retailers already reject C6/C8 PFAS stock voluntarily
4. PFAS-Free (C0) Fabric for Umbrellas
Working principle
No fluorine. Silicone/PU nano layer lowers fabric surface tension, so water forms beads and slides away.
Performance level
- • Daily city rain: Spray test grade 4–4.5, fully meets regular rain umbrella needs
- • Heavy storm/long-term outdoor: Slightly less durable than top C8 PFAS, acceptable for 90% business & daily umbrellas
Cost & supply
Slightly higher material cost than C6, but avoids huge customs penalty risks; most umbrella factories switched mass production to C0 by 2026.ed umbrella
5. Factory & Buyer Practical Tips
Before bulk order: Ask supplier for SGS PFAS-free test report (EN 17681 standard)
Test full components: Canopy cloth, printed ink, binding tape, not just main fabric
Product positioning choice
- • Low-cost domestic daily umbrellas: Some still use C6 (risky for cross-border resale)
- • EU/UK/US export, corporate business gifts: Must use 100% C0 PFAS-free cloth.
Old C8 PFAS is banned; C6 is being phased out globally. PFAS-free C0 silicone/PU coating is the mandatory sustainable standard for exported umbrellas in 2026 and later. Therefore, gradually, in Europe and US, all umbrella sellers will need to sell PFAS-free umbrella. That is a challenge for umbrella factories.
